There Has Never Been a Better Time for a No. 22

May 17, 2022

It's no secret that things have been a bit eventful in the bike world for the last two years, and at No. 22 we have had our share of excitement. With rapidly growing sales and supply chain challenges we have had our work cut out for us to navigate the changing landscape.

We have been hard at work growing our small team of skilled fabricators, investing in our equipment and growing and improving our production facility. The result is that our current lead time for new orders has now shrunk to the quickest it has been in the last two years: our current delivery estimate for new orders is 16 weeks, pending parts availability.

Dropping lead times and improving parts availability, plus limited bikes available for immediate delivery.

As a reminder, we keep a weekly update on our lead times stickied at the top of every page on our website, or you can access it directly here: https://22bicycles.com/pages/current-lead-times.

How have we trimmed lead times?

The changes we've made are far-reaching, and include:

Building our own paint facilities to bring all paintwork in house. Where we previously had all of our forks, stems, and other accessories painted for us by a third party, we now perform all paintwork in house in the same building your frame is welded. This has resulted in a nice increase in paint quality and a substantial reduction in finishing-related lead times.

A move to 3D printing for certain parts. We have redeveloped our iconic seat mast toppers as a 3D printed titanium part. Along with a reduction in weight and an increase in strength, the lead time for the new toppers is measured in days instead of many months for our previous cast version.

Substantially deeper materials inventory. To get ahead of supplier disruptions, we have invested in carrying deeper raw material inventory than ever before. We already perform all of our tube manipulation in-house, removing the variability and time of having butting, forming, bending and other operations performed off-site. Our tube racking is stacked with in some cases several years worth of inventory to ensure we can keep building without disruption.

New team members. Since the start of the pandemic we have welcomed several new employees to our team which has had a direct impact on how quickly we can do simple things like respond to emails, and more complex things like build world-beating bikes. With greater bench strength and expertise than we have ever had, our team has enabled us to increase our production pace lock-step with always improving the quality of every bike that rolls out the door.

Complete Builds are Back

As the world's appetite for bikes has grown, availability for components to complete a new build has been historically tight. Parts availability challenges absolutely persist, but we have been able to mitigate by ordering for inventory more groupsets than ever before. Those groupsets have recently arrived, meaning we have parts in the building waiting to find a home on your bike.

We currently have availability of groupsets for the following configurations. If you have a specific build or configuration in mind, please get in touch right away so we can discuss availability and allocating parts to your build.

11 Speed - Good Availability

  • Shimano Ultegra Mechanical
  • Shimano Dura Ace Di2
  • Shimano GRX 1X Mechanical

12 Speed - Good Availability

  • Shimano Ultegra Di2 12sp
  • SRAM Force AXS XPLR
  • SRAM Red AXS XPLR
  • SRAM Force AXS

More Limited Availability

  • SRAM Mullet
  • SRAM Force WIDE
  • Shimano Dura Ace Di2 12sp

Unavailable

  • Shimano GRX Di2

Gaps still exist with certain choices within groupsets—please reach out to us and we can help configure the best build for you based on current component availability. Handlebars and wheels are one of our current challenges, so we may have to recommend a substitution if your first choice isn't available.
